Neurodevelopmental Attention Clinic
Clinic for children with complex medical, neurological, or neurodevelopmental disorders and attention difficulties.
A new clinic for children with complex medical needs and difficulties with attention, impulsivity, and behavioural control is in place within Child Development Services at the Child Development Centre. This clinic will see children with neurologic illness or injury, chronic multi-system disease, or other neurodevelopmental disorders (ASD and FASD) that require consultation for specific diagnostic assessment, and/or management of attention difficulties, behavioural dysregulation, and/or impulsivity. The CDS consultant (and multidisciplinary team when appropriate) will join the “home medical team” or primary community pediatric clinic to coordinate diagnosis, formulate management plan, and attempt to stabilize on treatment with ongoing care returning to the medical home.

Research Institutes at the University of Calgary
Multiple research institutes at the University of Calgary are working to improve children's health and development.
Our institute is devoted to child health research in a wide spectrum of disciplines that will help us provide improved health care for children and youth and lay a solid foundation for their lifelong health and success.
The Owerko Centre at the Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI) is dedicated to studying neurodevelopmental disorders and child mental health. Launched in the fall of 2015, the Centre draws its support from a critical mass of multidisciplinary researchers across the University of Calgary with expertise encompassing a broad range of neurodevelopmental and pediatric mental health research in basic, clinical, health services and population health.
Understanding how the brain controls behaviour remains one the biggest fundamental challenges of neuroscience. Launched in November 2017, the Neurodevelopment team is led by Dr. Deborah Kurrasch. The team initially plans on focusing on the role of mitochondrial health in neurodevelopmental disorders, maternal influence of neurodevelopment, and neural stem cells in neurodevelopment.
The Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research & Education is a grassroots initiative, under the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and Department of Psychiatry umbrellas, that promotes research and education on early identification, treatment and prevention of mental disorders.
Developmental Pediatrics
The pediatric sub-specialty of Developmental Pediatrics is the clinical arm of the diagnosis and management of developmental concerns, neurodevelopmental disorders, and related medical issues. In Canada, Developmental pediatricians complete a formal fellowship training in addition to residency training in general pediatrics. Other sub-specialties that may be involved in the care of children with developmental concerns include pediatric neurology, pediatric physiatry (physical medicine and rehabilitation), pediatric psychiatry, as well as allied health professionals including Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Language Pathologists, Psychologists, Behavioural Specialists, and others.
